Open Garden Squares Weekend
Now, here’s a unique opportunity for Road Trips Gardeners headed across the pond. Visitors will have the rare chance to peer behind the walls of London’s private community gardens and squares during Open Garden Squares Weekend June 12 and 13, 2010. The assortment ranges from the historically memorable to the small and quirky, from the contemporary and eco-friendly to renowned roof gardens, cemeteries and working allotments.
Pictured (above, left) is Ham House, one of the gardens on the tour. Built in the 17th century, Ham House is one of the most outstanding surviving Stuart houses in the country. The formal gardens are gradually being restored to their original 17th-century splendor. (Tube stop: Richmond)
One ticket (£9) allows entry to all venues over the entire weekend (a complete list of gardens is here) — but plan carefully. It’s not possible to see all (or even most) of these private sanctuaries. There’s more online. It’s organized by the London Parks and Gardens Trust.
