Friesner Herbarium
Have you ever visited a herbarium, Road Trips Gardeners? If you’re wandering central Indiana April 1, 2011, stop by the open house for the Friesner Herbarium. It’s at 1 p.m. in Gallahue Hall 108, Butler University, 4600 Sunset Avenue, Indianapolis.
The featured speaker is Mike Homoya, a botanist with the Division of Nature Preserves of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. He’ll talk about his soon-to-be-published book, Wildflowers and Ferns of Indiana Forests – A Field Guide.
The Friesner Herbarium has just completed phase one of its digital collection. This project was made possible by a grant from the Indiana State Library to digitize specimens of Indiana ferns and orchids. This project was a relatively small pilot project of about 1,800 plants. Work now begins on specimens in the Asteraceae (sunflower) plant family.
