OMG! Orchids!
Well, actually, Road Trips Gardeners, the OMG stands for “Odd, Magical and Gorgeous”. But that’s just what to expect at a spectacular exhibit of orchids in the Conservatory of White River Gardens in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The orchids on display through October 30, 2011, are specimens from the Wheeler Orchid Collection and Species Bank, the largest University-based collection in the United States. Its mission is to conserve rare and endangered species of orchids, disseminate them for preservation, and utilize the Collection for research and education.
This once-in-a-lifetime show will rotate through more than 1,800 plants in the collection, which focuses on conservation and education by maintaining over 120 plant genera, represented by over 1,000 different species and over 500 hybrid orchids. As a designated Plant Rescue Center (a program with the USDA), WOCSB receives confiscated shipments of orchids that are imported illegally from across the globe.
White River Gardens is adjacent to the Indianapolis Zoo, 1200 West Washington Street, Indianapolis.
