Flower of the Day: Aster

Lovely lavender asters, seen on an early October day in Bad Woershofen, a spa town in southern Germany.

Did you know they’re the flower for September birthdays? The genus aster includes some 600 species of widely distributed flowering plants in the family asteraceae. The branch of botany dedicated to the study of this flower family is called synantherology.
