“Flower” of the Day: Sallier Oak

In hurricane-prone southern Louisiana, it’s not often that a Road Trips Gardener comes across a tree said to be more than 375 years old.
The Sallier Oak, now on the grounds of the Imperial Calcasieu Museum, 204 West Sallier Street, Lake Charles, Louisiana (map), is one such tree.
A Live Oak (Quercus virginiana), it marked a corner of the 1802 homesite of Charles Sallier, a native of Spain. Lake Charles is named in his honor.
The tree is an enrolled member of the Live Oak Society, an organization made up of live oak trees aged 100 years or older.
