washington_dc_orchidmonthMarch is Orchid Month at Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens, 4155 Linnean Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. (map).

The lasting beauty, history, and care of founder Marjorie Merriweather Post’s favorite flower are the focus of workshops, tours, and talks throughout the month.

Orchid Month continues the 50-year tradition of growing orchids at Hillwood started by Ms. Post’s captivation with the exotic flower. When she purchased Hillwood in 1955, she had four additional greenhouses built adjacent to the existing one to cultivate the exotic flower. Today, Hillwood’s collection contains over 2,000 orchids of approximately 1,200 different species and hybrids.

A greater number and variety are in bloom during March than any other season at Hillwood. Visitors will be able to enjoy many of the original cultivars of orchids grown by Ms. Post in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s that are hard to find on the market today.

Greenhouse Tours are conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, 2 p.m. Thursdays, and 1 p.m. Saturdays in March. NOTE: There is no greenhouse tour on March 23, due to Fabergé Egg Family Festival. Tickets — limited to 10 per tour, are distributed at the Visitor Center upon opening each day.

A talk on “A Lifelong Love Affair: Marjorie Merriweather Post and Orchids” by Head of Greenhouse and Design Operations Jason Gedeik is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m. Thursdays and 1 p.m. Fridays in March.

A hands-on workshop: “How to Get Your Orchid to Rebloom” will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. March 16, and 10:30 a.m. to noon and 2 to 3:30 p.m. March 30. Attendance is limited to 10; tickets are $25.

Another hands-on workshop: “To Repot or Not?” takes place from 10:30 a.m. to noon March 16. For this workshop, you need to bring one or two orchids from home, along with plastic pots with drain holes. Tickets are $25. to this hands-on workshop.

For information and registration, go online or call 202:686-5807.

Hillwood is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. on “select” Sundays. Admission for adults is $15.

Set among 25 acres of gardens and surrounding woodlands in northwest Washington, D.C., Hillwood includes 12 acres of formal gardens including a Japanese-style garden, a Rose Garden, and a French parterre, while the working greenhouses hold over 2,100 orchids.
