100 years of Méret Oppenheim
Basel, Switzerland, has a unique garden exhibit in the works.
Called the “100 years of Méret Oppenheim – the secret of vegetation” combines sculpture and nature in a project centered around the Surrealist artist’s 100th birthday — October 6, 2013.
For the project, in place August 15 through October 24, 2013, 20 contemporary artists are creating specific objects or installations in Basel gardens, parks and squares as an homage to the Berlin-born Swiss artist (pictured, above left). A city map will provides information about the Méret Oppenheim art projects and milestones around the city, where she died in 1985.
According to Wikipedia, Oppenheim’s best known piece is Object (Le Déjeuner en fourrure) (1936 — pictured, at right). The sculpture consists of a teacup, saucer and spoon that the artist covered with fur from a Chinese gazelle. It is displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
