Le Jardin du Monastère des Hospitalières
If you’re going to be in Montréal, Québec, Canada, later this summer, you might want to put one of these upcoming tours on your schedule, Road Trips Gardeners.
Le Jardin du Monastère des Hospitalières is the last remaining green space from a 150-acre property named Terre-de-la-Providence. This land was ceded in 1730 to the Religious Hospitallers by the Basset brothers, in exchange for a place to live out their lives.
The nuns used it for agriculture and livestock grazing as well as the operation of a quarry and a garden culture. When the Hôtel-Dieu left Old-Montréal, this land became the site of a new monastery and a new hospital and the garden served to feed the Congregation and the sick.
Tours are set for August 18 and September 8, 2013. Tickets are $10 through the Musée des Hospitalières de l’Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal, 201 des Pins Avenue West, Montréal, Québec, Canada (map).
