pennsylvania_longwood_waterlilyYou’ve got to hurry if you want to catch an intriguing exhibit in the Music Room at Longwood Gardens, 1001 Longwood Road, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. It closes September 29, 2013.

Experience the unique and haunting beauty of Victoria (the waterlily, not the British monarch) in rare nineteenth century lithographs, vivid photographs, live and preserved specimens, and projected film footage of her life in the wild. Learn how the story of Victoria is woven into the history of Longwood and how this lower has blossomed into a star of our summer experience.

Materials from the Library and Archives on display include plates from Victoria Regia or the Great Water Lily of America by John Fisk Allen, artifacts owned by Pierre S. du Pont, and letters and plans for the Garden display. Explore the secrets of how this queen of the plant kingdom has survived and thrived for millions of years in the ebbs and flows of the mighty Amazon and Paranas Rivers.

Through compelling photos you will meet the explorers who spent their lives searching for her elusive blossoms and brought back specimens to share with the world. Her fascinating biology has inspired artists, architects, and crowds of admirers around the globe.
