Your Road Trips Gardener isn’t sure why the 2010 spring tours are in the definitely-summer month of July, but — whatever. If you have a hankering to see what’s hidden behind walls in Newport, Rhode Island, check out The Secret Garden Tour. Despite its singular name, it’s really a collection of tours. The first set, the “spring” dates, are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 9, 10 and 11, 2010. The “fall” tours (technically still in summer) are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. September 10, 11 and 12, 2010. Tickets for these self-guided tours of private gardens are available at the Newport Visitors’ Center, 23 America’s Cup Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island, or at the main ticket office, 33 Washington Street (Spring Tour only), and Kingscote Mansion, 253 Bellevue Avenue (Fall Tour only). If you buy online or by telephone (401:847-0514), advance sale tickets are $20; on the days of the tour, they’re $25 each. Proceeds benefit the public schools of Rhode Island, funding their art, music, dance and theater programs in-school and after-school.
