Peek behind locked doors and discover the surprising number of green spaces that London has to offer during the annual Open Garden Squares Weekend.

This year’s dates are June 9 and 10, 2012. There are 23 new gardens participating and the gardens and squares are spread across 27 London boroughs.

From manicured squares surrounded by the capital’s most desirable properties to riotous flashes of color in unusual places, there is a wealth of horticulture and history to explore during this popular weekend.

One ticket allows entry into 212 gardens (some require you to book in advance) and many venues will also have guided tours, music, family activities and refreshments on offer.

The weekend is run in conjunction with the National Trust, which exists to preserve historic properties around the United Kingdom, and experts will be on hand to offer tips on how to get the most from your garden.
