Charleston Camellia Walks
Camellia Walks take place at 11 a.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays through March 22, 2014, at Middleton Place Gardens, 4300 Ashley River Road, Charleston, South Carolina.
Camellias bloom in hues from white to all shades of red and pink during the winter. There are more than 3,500 camellias in the gardens, many over 220 years old.
Reservations are required for the walks, which last approximately an hour and a half and are free with paid admission to Middleton Place. Tickets (which include general admission to Middleton Place) are available online. Tours begin at the Garden Market & Nursery.
The guided tours focus on camellias throughout the original gardens as well as the “new” camellia garden of the 1950s. There are hundreds of varieties, including the 1786 Reine des Fleurs, one of the first camellias planted in America.
