orange-butterfly-weedIf you’re wandering central Indiana this weekend, Road Trips Gardeners, consider a stop at Mounds State Park, 4306 Mounds Road, Anderson, Indiana.

The Friends of Mounds State Park group will sell native plants and wildflowers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday (May 17, 2014) on the nature center lawn. Needless to say, if you’re really keen on a particular plant, get there early because popular varieties sell quickly.

Native plants and wildflowers are hardy and can grow in less-than-perfect soils. More than 60 varieties will be available, including prairie and woodland plants, and plants that attract and host monarch butterflies, such as orange butterfly weed (pictured) and rose swamp milkweed. Plants range in price from $1 to $8.

Some plants are harvested from the butterfly garden at Mounds State Park. Others are grown by Friends of Mounds State Park members or purchased as starters from a local nursery. New this year, the Friends will also sell a limited supply of Leopold Bench kits. (The benches are named for conservationist Aldo Leopold.)

Standard park entrance fees of $5 per in-state vehicle and $7 per out-of-state vehicle apply.
