pennsylvania_philadelphia_flower-showThe Philadelphia Flower Show is set for February 28 through March 8, 2015, in the Pennsylvania Convention Center, 12th and Arch Streets, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

This year’s theme is “Celebrate the Movies”, so it’s only appropriate that the Entrance Garden will recreate the excitement of a movie premiere. Guests will enter through an Art Deco theater façade topped with a marquee of flowers and lights in blazing neon colors. The garden will recall the fantastic interiors of the 1920s movie palaces, with columns of juniper and palm trees; grand chandeliers dripping with blossoms, moss, jewels and fabrics; sweeps of bright green hostas; hundreds of elegant calla lilies; and a centerpiece made of thousands of roses “named” for movie superstars.

Also featured will be a 36-by-16 foot screen that will show the winning entries in the Flower Show short-film competition, “What Is Beauty?”

There’s so much more Road Trips Gardeners will just have to wander the event’s website (would you believe there’s even a butterfly garden inside the convention center during the show?).

Philadelphia is the home to America’s first horticultural society, The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, founded in 1827, and the world’s oldest and largest indoor flower show. The Philadelphia Flower Show was first held in 1829 in an 82-by-69-foot building called Masonic Hall on Chestnut Street. Twenty-five Society members showed off their horticultural treasures, including a variety of exotic and native plants.

In 1966, the Show was presented in the lower level of the Civic Center and remained there until 1996, when it moved to its current location at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. In this Center City venue, the Show encompasses 33 indoor acres, with exhibit space taking up 10 acres of the main exhibit hall. The Show now entertains more than 265,000 people each year.

Tickets are available online.
