Crosses of Flowers
In Spain, religious tradition provides many reasons to celebrate.
In springtime — after Easter is over — the Andalusian city of Córdoba celebrates the Crosses of May. This year, the celebration is April 29 through May 3, 2015.
The popular festivity features numerous crosses made from flowers which are installed throughout the streets and squares of the city. These creations then take part in a competition organized by the town council.
The flower-covered crosses are set up in squares, alleys and open spaces. They are also occasionally decorated with typical silk ‘mantones’ or shawls, multicoloured throws and other popular items.
The neighborhood associations and social clubs are in charge of making sure that Cordoba is a riot of color and festive high spirits. The crosses can be visited all day long, and at night the atmosphere continues with concerts, music and dancing.
