Great Migration Garden Tour in Chicago
Blacks in Green is staging a trolley tour to 16 sites between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday (November 7, 2015). Tours start at the Blacks in Green Clubhouse, 6011 South St. Lawrence Avenue, Chicago, Illinois.
Led by landscape architects and their placemaking partners, it’s a prelude for “The 16 Great Migration Gardens of West Woodlawn”, a permanent installation being designed for Chicago’s first black middle-class neighborhood.
In the afternoon, landscape architects review the sites through photographs, sketches, and brainstorming. The day also features an exhibition, a panel discussion and video featuring sculptor Milton Mizenberg as he mentors local youth in the art of placemaking. The public is also invited to discover the West Woodlawn Botanic Garden & Village Farm Initiative’s communal studio, housed in a former garage.
A performance of the works of Toni Morrison on the African American garden will also be included.
