It’s hard to describe just what Gunillaberg is. Yes, it’s the creation of Tage Andersen, a visionary floral artist. Yes, it’s an historic estate in the rural province of Småland, Sweden. Yes, it includes artwork and flowers and topiary and paintings hung in the trees. Yes, it’s open to the public during the summer months (May 29 through August 31, plus weekends in September).

You just have to see it for yourself.

Road Trips Gardeners heading to Copenhagen, Denmark, or Stockholm, Sweden, should plan to rent cars and make a visit to Tage Andersen’s whimsical garden (it’s just outside Bottnaryd, a bit west of Jönköping, about half-way between the two capital cities).

Gunillaberg, originally the 17th century estate of Johan Printz (who went on to become the third governor of New Sweden in what is now Delaware), was written up in the June/July 2016 issue of Condé Nast Traveler. Stephen Whitlock termed it a “botanically trippy venture”.

Before that, it was profiled more extensively on Gardenista, where Sophia Moreno-Bunge lauds Andersen’s “landscape of pastures, ravines, streams, ponds, and fields” that’s “home to farm animals, topiary courtyards, an orangery, and sculptures made by the floral artist himself”.
