Orchid Show at Chicago Botanic Garden
“Orchids in Vogue” is on display through March 26, 2017, at the Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe, Illinois.
It’s the garden’s biggest flower show of the year, and they’re taking a playful look at orchids how they have influenced and continue to inspire popular culture. In a nod to the world of haute couture (Fendi and Dior are among the fashion houses that have embraced orchids), three teams of garden designers and horticulturists have created “dresses” made of fresh orchids.
On display is the rarely-seen Phalaenopsis ‘V3’ orchid and a 15-foot tall Vanda “wind chime.”
Every weekend during the show, orchids are for sale at the Orchid Marketplace.
Members of the Illinois Orchid Society offer repotting services on select weekends for the orchids you bring from home. The society’s annual Spring Show & Sale is March 11 and 12. Individual orchids in 128 classes will vie for ribbons.
The post-show plant sale takes place in the garden’s Nichols Hall March 30, 2017. Public hours are 2 to 4 p.m.
