The Maios Fiesta Celebrates Spring Flowers in Spain
If April showers bring May flowers, then Pontevedra, Spain, has the right idea. Its Maios Fiesta, set for May 1, 2017, celebrates the arrival of good weather — and the first spring flowers — in Galicia.
The festival is of Celtic origin, and is celebrated throughout the province, but especially in the cities of Pontevedra and Ourense.
Since 1970, Plaza de la Ferrería Square in Pontevedra has been the festive setting for a competition to elect the best maios – figures created out of branches and flowers. Alongside each of these figures, a child sings a song while the rest of the group keep time.
