Orchids at Newfields, Indianapolis, IndianaOrchids in The Garden” returns for the third year to the Indianapolis Museum art — newly renamed Newfields, 4000 Michigan Road, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Curated by the Newfields horticulture staff, this year’s show runs February 9, 2018, through March 4, 2018. Hundreds of blooming plants from around the world will be on display in the Madeline F. Elder Greenhouse. The historic Lilly House will be filled with orchids and their intoxicating aromas. Orchids will be on sale in the Pop-Up Shop located in The Brett Waller Gallery inside Indianapolis Museum of Art, where staff and volunteers will be happy to share advice on orchid care.

All sorts of orchid-related events also are scheduled during the show, including daily tours at 2 p.m. that explore stories of orchid collectors and orchid lore in the galleries of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

Road Trips Gardeners who want to taste their orchids should sign up for an evening in the Elder Greenhouse from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. February 23, 2018, sampling wine and desserts inspired by the form, color and history of Edible Orchids. Cost for the evening is $75 (and it’s recommended for those 21 and older).

The IMA Café will feature orchid inspired menu items during the exhibition, including a mixed green salad topped with strawberries, candied almonds, orchid blossoms and a vanilla citrus dressing, other options include a mixed berry trifle with white chocolate vanilla mousse, and a blackberry vanilla Prosecco cocktail.

The orchids exhibit is included with general admission to Newfields.

A class on “Orchid Epiphyting” is set for 10 a.m. February 17, 2018, In the Elder Greenhouse. Fee is $45. Many orchids in nature are epiphytes, meaning they grow without soil. In this hands-on workshop, learn to grow orchids in the air with a Newfields orchid expert. Mount your own orchid to take home and learn which varieties are best suited for thriving without soil.

A class on “Orchid Terrariums” is set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. February 22, 2018, and repeated from 10 a.m. to noon February 24, 2018. Fee is $50. With a little help from Greenhouse Specialist and Orchid Expert Ian Wilhite, participants will make an orchid terrarium. You will be provided with a glass container and all the material you will need including a miniature orchid.

An “Orchid Discussion” will begin at 7 p.m. March 1, 2018, in the Lilly House. Resident orchid expert Ian Wilhite will talk about the plants and answer questions.

“Orchid Basics” will be covered between 10 a.m. and noon March 3, 2018, in the Elder Greehouse. This is the place to get started with orchids as you’ll learn about “insights and insider tricks” on watering, fertilization, and re-blooming for next year.

The 152-acre cultural campus of Newfields features art galleries, gardens, an historic mansion, performance spaces, a nature preserve and sculpture park, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art, one of the ten largest and oldest general art museums in the nation.
