bitter herbsHerbs fit into almost every facet of a Road Trips Gardener’s life, from healing to high fashion. A new series led by professional herbalists and herbal artisans takes place in August at the National Arboretum,
3501 New York Avenue, NE Washington, D.C.

First up is “Herbal Bitters: Sweeter than You Think”, set for 1 to 4 p.m. August 4, 2018, in the National Herb Garden. Discover the benefits that bitter herbs offer, from jazzing up your favorite cocktail to aiding digestion after a heavy meal. A variety of hand-crafted bitters will be available for tasting. This program is part of the Under the Arbor series and is free. No registration required.

Next is “Herbal Salves: They’re the Balm”, set for 10 a.m. ’til noon August 11, 2018, in the Visitor Center classroom. Learn how to make herb infused oils for use in soothing salves. The healing properties of various oils and herbs will be covered, and participants will get to take home a jar of salve made in class. Registration is required, and there’s a fee of $35.

The last one, “Hot, Hot, Hot! The Secrets of Herbal Aphrodisiacs”, takes place 10 a.m. ’til noon August 18, 2018, in the Visitor Center classroom. Herbalist Joan Greeley, owner of Plant Wisdom Within, will instruct participants in the creation of “mojo-enhancing” herbal concoctions. The weather isn’t the only thing hot this summer! Due to the, ahem, mature nature of this program, registrants must be at least 18 years old. Yes, registration is required, and there’s a $35 fee.

Single genus gardens include: azalea, boxwood, daffodil, daylily, dogwood, holly, magnolia, and maple.
