The Flower Carpet in Brussels, Belgium

Flower Carpet, Brussels, BelgiumThe top of this Road Trips Gardener’s bucket list? The bi-annual Flower Carpet on Grand-Place in Brussels, Belgium.

It’ll be August 16 through 19, 2018. This year’s carpet is dedicated to Guanajuato, a region of central Mexico with a rich flower tradition.

Every two years since 1971, the large public square in the middle of Brussels has been carpeted with begonias — flower by flower — directly onto the cobblestones by horticulturalists from Ghent. Nearly a million flowers are required to create the ephemeral 20,000-square-foot carpet. (Begonias have been one of Belgium’s major exports since 1860).

The best view is from above. Tickets (if not sold out) are available online for this panoramic view of the carpet from the City Hall balcony. (For those with the right software, there’s a webcam atop the Brussels City Hall.)

You might still be able to find a spot on one of the myriad group tours headed to the Flower Carpet. Options include Door 2 Door Tour, a day trip from Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport, Newmarket Holidays, and Gold Crest.
