Floralia 2019 to Celebrate Pieter Bruegel
The 16th edition of Floralia Brussels takes place in the park and greenhouses of the castle of Grand Bigard (Groot-Bijgaarden) April 6 through May 5, 2019.
Grand Bigard is northwest of Brussels, Belgium, near the intersection of E19 and E40.
The park is 14 hectares (about 34 acres), and incorporates nearly all spring bulb varieties — some one million – planted by hand in stages so that flowers are always blooming. Special attention goes to the tulips, with almost 400 varieties, but hyacinths and daffodils are also well represented. Flower arrangements will be on display in the greenhouse.
To commemorate the 450th anniversary of Pieter Bruegel’s death, Floralia Brussels will celebrate his artwork. A number of reproductions of his paintings — with a touch of contemporary floral art — will be displayed.
Bruegel (the Elder) died in 1569. Born in Brabant, he’s considered the most significant artist of Flemish Renaissance painting.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day (note that the ticket office closes at 5:30 p.m.)
