Holland, Michigan, Paints the Town Orange
It’s the 90th anniversary year for Tulip Time in Holland, Michigan. The dates are May 4 through 12, 2019.
This year’s theme is “orange” (that’s the color symbolizing the royal family in the Netherlands), so all sorts of orange flower bulbs will blossom forth throughout town — along Eighth Street, in the Windmill Island Gardens, and in household gardens.
Many events are planned, including a river cruise, quilt show, 5K run, live entertainment (Jay Leno will be there!), and a carnival just for kids. A traditional Dutch marketplace features the tastes, sights, sounds — and crafts of 19th Century Holland.
Dutch-themed events include lots of dancing, a “People’s Parade” May 8, 2019, filled with Dutch touches, including the traditional street cleaning (it steps off about 2 p.m. — after an hour of Dutch dance performances — and proceeds along Eighth Street from Columbia Avenue to Kollen Park). There’s also a Children’s Parade May 9, and a Music Parade May 11.
But Road Trips Gardeners come for the tulips. Here’s an online guide to seeing the colorful blooms.
