Orchids and Tropical Bonsai in Pittsburgh
There’s no better escape from cold winter days than a stroll through a verdant glasshouse. The Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show: A Splash of Brilliance showcases the beautiful specimens of two of the collections of the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, One Schenley Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in immersive, vibrant displays.
Open now through February 28, 2021, the displays let visitors:
- Find their flow as they admire a tiered fountain cascading with white orchids and dripping with silver Spanish moss as two Christmas palms tower above.
- Step into Phipps’ paradise, where a soundtrack of water trickling from various water features exudes serenity.
- Look up in the Sunken Garden, where orchids in planted chandeliers, ring baskets and hanging baskets fill the air.
- Soak in the vibrant colors and whimsical shapes of orchids arranged in six- and nine-foot towers in the shape of dripping fountains.
- Marvel at the graceful beauty of the tropical bonsai specimens that have been in training for decades, showcasing a wide variety of species and pruning techniques.
- Listen to the sound of a bamboo shishi-odoshi, or “deer-scarer fountain”, providing a gentle repeating thud as the bamboo fills up and tips over.
