Texas Daylilies
Hemerocallis fan, Road Trips Gardener? If you’re wandering the Texas panhandle on September 11, 2010, drop by the Amarillo Botanical Gardens, 1400 Streit Drive, Amarillo, Texas. The Golden Spread Daylily Society is holding its annual sale between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Caution: go early rather than late, ’cause they tend to sell out early! Plants are $3 each.
You can’t get there from the main gate, however. Look for signage directing you to the rear of the administrative entrance to the gardens. The sale’s in the classroom.
General admission to the Amarillo Botanical Gardens is free until October 1, 2010, courtesy of Amarillo National Bank (it’s usually $4 for adults). And (delightful surprise) leashed dogs are welcome.
Of course, our readers already know this, but “daylily” is the common name of the species, hybrids and cultivars of the genus Hemerocallis. Bet you didn’t know, though that the daylily is the official flower of the city of Amarillo! The Golden Spread is part of Region 6 of the American Hemerocallis Society
