Flowering Frost
“Flowering Frost,” an exhibit of 36 photographic works by David Boesch is on display through November 14, 2010, in Monsanto Hall on the upper level of the Ridgway Visitor Center at the Missouri Botanical Garden, 4344 Shaw Boulevard, St. Louis, Missouri.
Boesch depicts the visual phenomenon of “frost flowers” or “ribbon ice,” the frosty, spiraling formations that occur when freezing air, warm soil and plant life combine. This relatively unknown phenomenon has several names including Frost Flowers, Ice Ribbons, Ice Flowers and Ribbon Ice. They form under ideal conditions and, in Missouri, are most common in undisturbed fields, forming along the base of White Crownbeard stalks (also known as Frostweed).
