Orange City Tulip Festival
Road Trips Gardeners in search of tulips should put Orange City, Iowa, on their itineraries next month. The annual Tulip Festival is May 13, 14 and 15, 2010. No, the town has no citrus trees! It was founded by 70 immigrant Dutch families in 1870 — and named for the House of Orange (the royal family) in the Netherlands. There are tulip beds scattered throughout the town, but tulips also are on display in cut flower arrangements. And, since this is the Midwest after all, there are lots of other events that have little to do with tulips, such as a car show, a quilt show and a footrace. All the details are online. Breng ons een bezoek!*
(* Pay us a visit — that’s the town’s official motto, in Dutch, of course!)
